Call of Duty returns, and to many people’s surprise, it’s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter.
The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles
Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat
World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever
The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes

The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world.

Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series’ first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game’s longevity.

    Key Features
    • Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
    • Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
    • Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
    • Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that’s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
    • Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
    About the Developer: Treyarch
One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

4 out of 5 stars Limited difficulty & length   February 27, 2009

This is probably best regarded as an expansion pack for Call of Duty 3 to cover the end of WW2. The gameplay is very good, but the game is rather easy and/or short. It only took just over a week playing 1-2 hours per night to complete at the regular setting. After switching to the hardest setting it took three nights to complete.

It is all infantry work with a mission driving a tank in the Battle of the Bulge which was rather simple and very short and a short Jeep ride later on. The AI is a bit slow, but if you go forward they will follow. Just try not to shoot them because that is not allowed and you will go back to the last checkpoint.

If you enjoy FPS titles, then this is worth buying, but be aware of the limited game content. Although there is an occasional glitch, the game runs well, even during the intense firefights.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent non-stop action   November 15, 2008

Finally it arrives, after a long wait. The first think I thought about when I got this game today is why didn't we have the previous edition on PS2?
Anyways, the game is excellent, it is set in WWII, so it will be a very familiar territory for who ever had the chance to play titles like Medal of Honor, Sniper Elite (environmentally speaking, not game-play), and the previous Call of Duty Titles. Graphically speaking, it looks so good, nothing jaw-dropping though, and it shows how the PS2 is becoming old nowadays. You can hardly notice any difference from other FPS titles in this sense. However, the best thing is gameplay, wow, you start very very easy, in a small tutorial, showing you how to control, move, throw grenades, etc, then hell opens, and it is non-stop action. There is not point where you do not get showered from the enemy, especially with difficulty setting set to high. The flamethrower is fabulous, you can do massive damage with it, and it looks great. The audio is superb as well, it is like actually being there, though sometimes the speech did seem vague, and not as loud as it should be cause of the background noise. Ok, it is a war scene supposedly, but it is still a game, and sometimes you need to pay attention to what others are saying to you. The physics and the way things work around you add a lot to this game, for instance with your flamethrower, you can cause a barrel to explode sending all enemies hiding behind it to the air. It does seem that the missions are a bit short, in a sense that you always want more, i would not mind if this game takes me a year to finish. Weapons seem a lot more realistic as well, and it is not as easy as in some FPS games to just point, shoot, and it is done. Here, the enemy AI is quite clever, they keep running, and jumping off bridges and walls, etc. So you gotta work hard to sort things out.
Get it now, no need to wait at all, it is worth every penny, you are gonna enjoy it so much. Definitely better than the latest MOH and it sums up every CoD title so far. Superb stuff, and I really hope they keep making it for the PS2.

5 out of 5 stars excellent   January 21, 2009

although this version is more cut down than the ps3 version the in game gameplay is so good that it is not far off the ps3 quality and being a ps2 game that is an awsome achievement. The graphics are top notch and the videos between each mission make you feel as though you are part of the war. The sound effects are great and there are loads of quality weapons to choose from and loads of enemies such as japanese and nazis.
hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Shrouds all other call of dutys.... easily!   February 24, 2010
Mookster (UK)
I have always been a fan of call of duty, and loved all their games (except, maybe, finest hour) but this is like something they've never done before. It shrouds all of the other Cod games easily. Ok it's graphics ain't as good as Cod 3 in the cutscenes, but everything else is superb, it even beats my beloved modern warfare 2!

First the missions. You start off out in Japan as Joe Miller and, suprise suprise, you start off doing training. Then halfway through that, you come under attack from the Japs. Unlike with call of duty 3, where I lost interest more easily, I loved this immediately and didn't stop. After the first level it gets even better. After five levels of sheer delight you start campaign 2, WINTER OFFENSIVE! This houses 4 levels, one of which is a tank mission but no, you don't drive the tank, just shoot, which I didn't mind, iI found the controls clumsy for the tanks before. Anyway, this campaign isn't as good as the first, but is fun. In a way, I think world at war is mainly about the Japanese missions, that the other ones are just to vary it. I certainly wanted just more and more of the Japanese missions. They were so addictive. After campaign 2 you move onto number 3 - VICTORY IN EUROPE - which only has 2 missions - but houses one of my favourites, one where you have to destroy a rocket. Those missions were fun but I wanted to be out in japan instead. The next campaign was the last - VICTORY IN THE PACIFIC - more japanese missions. Woowoo. You only got two, but they were great. The first one was TYPHOON OF STEEL. You started off storming a mountain. That was good fun. But it went from being do-able to very hard in the last mission - SHURI CASTLE. Your mission is to storm the castle, which sounded simple enough. But the first part was murder. Then after that it was easier. The best part of that one was holding off the banzi attacks. When I finished it I was kinda sad to see the back of my sergent as Kiefer Sutherland voices him. They could have added more missions in as it contains 13, less than Cod 3!

This is what i've been itching to get onto - weapons. For the German missions you get the usual MP-40, Thompson, M1 Garrand, MP-44, Bar etc. But in the Japanese missions you get some different ones, like the Type 99 and the Type 100. But most of all you get the flamethrower. I was suprised at how realistic the fire was, consiidering the rest of the graphics was quite grainy. It is so effective and good, plus you never run out of flame. I think you get it in 2 missions, though there is some guy using one who dies and drops it, but I couldn't pick it up. Shame they didn't give you one in more levels.

I could go on to your teammates and their AI and the enemys, but what would I say that i've never said before? Their AI is good, bosh friend and phoe, but not as good as the Xbox 360 version or Cod MW2, but hey at least they actually realeased it on ps2.

All-in-all i'd say this is an extremely fun game and the best cod around, shame they didn't give you the Nazi Zombies feature. If this one is great, the one for Xbox 360 must be Brill. I couldn't recommend this more to anyone who wants a new game or is just bored with their current ones. It's great, fun and pure awesomness..... Get it! :D
