5 out of 5 stars sublime entertainment   December 27, 2008

I have had my 60GB ps3 for going on two years now and whislt it has been fun both online and offline, i feel that i was missing out on some truly great gaming, therefore i decided to get one for christmas.

Setup was fairly simple, i didn't particulary need the instructions because i am used to seting gaming consoles up and it is quite easy.

so what about this cusred red ring of death (RROD) issue. Well i thought i got it, let me explain:

I was certain that the power cable was attached properley, in this case it wasnt and when i was playing gears of war 2 it switched itself off and gave me four red rings. Fixed it though and it works fine now.

As for graphics the console is capable of resolutions up tp 1080P (1920 x 1080), much like the PS3. So graphics wise it looks good but it isn't so far ahead that the PS3 can't bloody keep up.

Controller ergonomics have improved since the previous Xbox console, the controller is lighter, buttons are closer to each other and the battery pack is very easy to replace.

So what do you get with the new Falcon Units, well beside being cooler you get:

Component cable ( no HDMI cable)
Ethernet cable
xbox 360 Joypad with batteries
power plug and AC adapter
a month free of gold LIVE
and a headset with a Mic

To recharge your controller you need a play and charge kit that is normally around £7-10 and a HDMI cable is about £3 so it wont cost too much to get those little extras.

Xbox LIVE - i have been on today and despite everyone complaining about the level of abuse, i can safely say that i haven't encountered any as of yet. fingers crossed i dont but hey who knows.

There are a few other features you can do such as:

windows media centre - share music, flims and pictures with your PC via the ethernet cable

download movies from LIVE

communicate with friends via Instant messaging, voice chat or video chat. you can have up to 6 people using voice chat via the LIVE party system.

Im sure there is a lot more to cover but i didn't want to yammer on forever. This for me is a fantastic source of entertainment and is easily the best value for money when it comes to next gen consoles.

final score - 9.5/10

looses half a point for that god awful AC adapter and the DVD tray is still loud :D

I recently purchased this model of Xbox 360, and in the light of the New Xbox Experience (NXE) that has just been released, I thought I'd do a review. I'm very happy with the Xbox, and I have to say I haven't touched the Wii since I bought it (or for about 4 months previous to buying it). Here's my opinion of the good and bad aspects, and some stuff you may not know you can do with your Xbox!

GOOD:

Graphics:
Excellent. They look superb on my HDTV (even though it's only 22in), and this new model supports HDMI. It's worth noting that it's not compatible with the NXE right now, however. Eurogamer have also comparing cross platform PS3 and Xbox games since the beginning, and the Xbox usually comes out on top due to keeping its frame rates higher.

Gameplay:
Controller is great (bar the dodgy d-pad), and there are lots of excellent exclusives for Xbox 360 (Mass Effect, Gears of War, Viva Piñata, Banjo Kazooie to note a few). Most other games are cross platform too.

Price:
Amazing, cheaper than Wii or PS3. You can't really argue with that, and the value really is incredible. Games can also be picked up at silly prices second hand.

Online:
Online offers a slew of features I'll go over here
- Online play, works great provided your broadband is fast enough.
- Chat, via MSN messenger. Works just like a phone, but free. And you can play games at the same time. And leave annoying voice messages.
- Buy things! this is shoved in your face a little, but you can download excellent games like Braid and Geometry Wars from the Live Arcade.
- Download free demos and videos.
- Party up with your friends and chat/play together.
- Spy on what your friends are up to (as if Facebook wasn't enough) and compare skills with Achievements.

Other Features:
The NXE offers a lot of new stuff, most of which is an oppertunity to Buy! Buy! Buy! stuff from Microsoft, but also some really cool things:

- Play media files and music from portable hard drives. All compatibility issues seem to have been sorted, as mine wouldn't work on a friend's Xbox before and now it does. Also, it'll play .avi files :)
- Customise your Avatar (like a grown up nintendo Mii, but less creepily unchanging) to make yourself look cool. All blokes look a bit girly though.

BAD:

- No internet browser: why, when even PSP and DSi have one?
- Disk tray is loud: although not when playing DVDs. I've found I'm used to this now.
- Consumerist Home screen: Buy things, now! There are about 3 tabs of stuff to buy on the Dashboard now.
- Microsoft points are quite expensive: but then so are Wii points.
- Red Ring of Death: small chance that your console might decide to die at some point. Microsoft insures them for 2 years free of charge.
- Xbox Live is Expensive: £39 - 49.99 a year for Gold (online game playing) membership.
- Lag in online gaming if broadband connections are slow.
- Miss out on other platform exclusives: No amount of Banjo Kazooie will console you if you wish it were Little Big Planet.

All in all, this is the cheapest and probably most fun way to join the next generation of gaming, and to bring all of your friends along. The most pressing problem for me is a lack of good games on a console, or them being very expensive, and the Xbox is concern free in this area. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars I Love It!!!!!!!!!!!   November 26, 2008

I have owned an XBOX 360 sine the day they came out (well I had it pre-ordered, the less said about the original release the better!!!) and would just like to take this oppourtunity to praise my little box of joy and wonder that sits underneath my TV.
I have owned 2 360's the very 1st Premium Model & the new 120GB Elite model w/ HDMI. My Premium still works (ish... its about 4 years old now) alothough the disk tray can be know to seize up, this is solved with a sturdy prod with the finger though, yet it continues to work well despite being more full of dust than my mums Dyson. The old Premium now has pride of place in work as the office games console and continues to work really wel despite its old age and somewhat harsh treatment. The 360 Elite is a stunning machine when viewed in HD, had it for over a year now and it's never put even a little toe wrong never mind a whole foot. Everything the Premium does the Elite does, only slightly smoother.

I am very confident in saying that 'You Can't Go Wrong' in buying one of these machines. Other consoles (PS3, Nitendo Wii) may be more suited to what you need (i.e. Blu Ray Player, swinging your arm like a loon) but i would recommend a 360 to anyone, old or young. The graphics are spot on even without the HDMI connection, when you watch a DVD the image is played through the graphics card inside the 360 so the image is slightly improved. The collection of games available is excellent, from all out shoot-em-ups (Halo 3) to mind bending puzzle games (Portal) the 360 can keep all but the most hyperactive people busy for hours.

The only issue I have with the 360 is pretty much the same issue everyone else has had with it: NOISE. But I tune it out now, it can be a bit irrating at first, but its now just one of the sounds of my house like the washing machine or something. The new dashboard update give a quick-fix solution to this if it irritates you, by installing the game to your hard drive you can run it from there, meaning the disk drive is only used to verify the authenticity of your game disk. This means faster load time and smoother game play among other things.

I have not played either the PS3 or the Nitendo Wii to any extent as to be able to review them. So I cannot recommend the XBOX 360 over the other two....
I just recommend it full stop.

5 out of 5 stars Very quiet!   November 1, 2008

I don't know why some people are saying these are loud. They must have faulty ones or something!
This model really is incredibly quiet compared to the original 360's, both the fans and the DVD drive!

There is a really bad design flaw though, if you want to use hdmi and the optical audio out you can't fit both an hdmi cable and the AV cable (which is needed for the optical out) in because the sockets are too close together! So you need the audio out dongle, which you can only buy with the official Microsoft hdmi cable, which costs £30! Not good!
