SMASHING! May 29, 2009 Mr. T. Brookes (West Mids) 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
A good game, and easily the best Tennis game. Just got this today and very impressed with the graphics, improved gameplay from the last version and most importantly the world tour mode. The Career mode is long, quite challenging and arcade style fun and development. There are strong new mini games, a good training school with Tim Henman and now 23 real top players (8 new ones). The new 'over the shoulder' cam is very good and online play looks very well supported and adds to the VT world.
However, there are quite a few bugs! Trophies aren't always awarded and there are online glitches and teleporting ball shots.
If you like tennis then this is the game for you, but it will frustrat. 1 player mode can be fun, but never as much as multiplayer. Arcadey and easy to pick up with online play to maximise the fun of this beautiful game.
Amusing game! July 11, 2009 Pietrini Rocco (Jesi, Italy) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
A wonderful graphics meets a really amusing arcade game...but not much realistic!
Perfect to play with friends, but in the long run it could be repetitive...
Other bad thing for me is that Serena Williams is not in the game!
First tennis game for me but very, very impressive with only a few minor faults. June 13, 2009 GranTurismoStig 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Virtua Tennis 2009 Review
NB. Only got the game recently so yet to really get into the World Tour Career mode.
Good: Impressive graphics, esp. when compared to previous tennis games I have briefly seen in trailers, shops and other people's homes. Players that are included such as Federer, Nadal and Ivanovic are well-chosen, and you certainly aren't left wanting for more (alhough I wouldn't say no...) World Tour mode seems impressive from the little taste I have had of it so far, with very realistic settings and detailed also. Serving control is very good in an area where I would imagine is very hard to get right.
Bad: Not much, considering how apathetic I was when I eventually took the plunge and bought the game. By far the most annoying thing is the drop shots, which it seems to be almost impossible to do anyway realistically close to the net. If they landed where they do in the game in real life, you'd be eaten alive by your opponent, yet it treats the shots as if they are really difficult. Although I cannot vouch for this, I have heard the unlicensed, created players, are also much less detailed than the real life ones.
To sum up, this game has really impressed me so far. I don't write many reviews, but this really deserves its four star rating and wouldn't have to do much in order to earn five in my opinion. Only a few some faults as mentioned above hold it back. Personally, one of my favourite things about this game is it's 'pickup-ability' - the way that even if you're a complete amatuer like I was (mostly) to tennis games, you can pick it up as long as you've read the manual, and enjoy a decent game of realistic tennis.
Overall, again, I would recommend this product to anyone that is either an expert pro or a complete novice of any age that is interested in tennis for this product.
40-Love.. well maybe 40-Like December 18, 2009 Bruce Banner (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Deuce! That small word which lets everyone know that the scores in a tennis match are currently tied sums up how I feel about this latest release of Virtua Tennis compared to its previous instalment.
By know you have read the reviews, possibly even played the game and are still unsure about it.. well thats how I feel anyway. I'm not sure if this is a sequel in the usual sense of the word more a slight upgrade. Not that there is anything wrong with sticking to a tried and tested formula as the boys/girls at Konami have found out to their cost with Pro Evo.
Therefore the positives of this game remain in large the same, exciting, easy to play, good sound and graphics. However, where this game falls is the lack of polish. Examples of this are the poor tournament award ceremonies which seem to have been put together at the last minute as the resounding click as the short animated sequence ends is testament to. Also there appears to be a minor issue with the screen `jerking' on some shots as it seems to struggle to keep up to pace with the game.
There are also a few extreme tennis fans that argue that you should be able to play full matches in the tournament mode. This would be great if Virtua Tennis 2009 is the one game that you have got as I for one know that the game was long enough to play in my opinion.
There is also the age old comparison between realism and fun! Granted VT 2009 is not the realistic game as you will find it near on impossible to hit a shot too long or not to get it in court unless it is slammed at 155 mph at your player, but this adds to the fun of it all and I'm sure it is good to introduce novices to the game.
Fun mini games make a welcome appearance in some cases and downright frustrating in others as you are supposed to guess what you have to do in order to successfully complete the relevant stage
Minor gripes aside I think this is a solid effort from Sega but hopefully more time and effort will be sent on the next Virtua Tennis giving a more polished product. The rebranding of the Virtua Series with the relevant year I hope is not a sign of sub standard releases to be churned out on a yearly basis.
the ultimate tennis sim June 20, 2009 Andrew Cowie 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is my second virtua tennis game for the ps3 and this is certaintly a big improvement on virua tennis 3. the graphics are much slicker and the play is much better. They have added davis cup matches to the tour which also has amateur and pro phases so you have to work much harder to get to the top increasing the longetiviety of the game. the minigames used to train your player are still there along with some new ones. my only criticism is that only the top 15 players in the world are represented in tour mode the other 235 all have a similar apperance- overall though a great addition to the series
