The best Madden yet! August 18, 2009 KM (England) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I've been playing the Madden games for years and I can honestly say that this year's improvements are very impressive, especially with the newly added Pro-Tackling feature as it means that it is a lot harder than it used to be as you are now getting attacked by 7 defenders as opposed to the usual 2 or 3. The computer AI is much cleverer than I can ever remember as well, so the 1 player franchise and exhibitions prove more of a challenge and are good practice for when you take on your friends and others online. If you're a newcomer to the series and want to play this online, I'd recommend some unranked matches at first as ranked games can only be played at All-Pro level with 5 minute quarters, which can be hard even for players who have been playing for years.
The graphics are so realistic that it is easy to forget you're playing a game sometimes and the presentation is superb, giving you full halftime show including information on other games from around the league during franchise games. The commentary is very accurate and gives player information as well as very responsive play-by-play analysis. The controls are much improves too, now using the right stick much more for dodging when running with the ball or going for strong hit-stick tackles.
Overall though this is definitely the best Madden game yet and I know I'm going to get my money's worth over the next 12 months.
American Football Novices September 28, 2009 My Real Name Is... (England) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought this game a few weeks ago due to my sudden interest in american football, a game i'd previously dismissed as "rugby with padding".
The actual reality is a game with a surprising amount of depth and this is reflected in Madden NFL 2010. Every aspect is here which is just what you'd expect from an EA sports game, all stadiums, rosters and teams etc are all up to date for the new season. It all looks fantastic, again as you'd expect, with realistic running, throwing and catching movements drawing you into the game and making it a pretty immersive experience.
Gameplay wise you have play now where you can set up a game between teams of your choosing, you choose the stadium and kits and you can also switch playbooks between teams which is good if you find something which works for you and prevents you having to play with the same team over and over.
There's also the obligatory online mode where you have various different modes, the most used one by me being the ranked mode, where you go up against an opponent and your ranking increases/decreases accordingly with how well you do. For beginners if you're going to step into the online game mode you might want to do so with caution. If you haven't played a madden game before like me, you will get beaten by the endless stream of more experienced players. Don't be too put off though! You can set it so that it finds players within 5 levels of your rank which makes things a little easier and leads to much more enjoyable games, being able to score a few touchdowns even in a loss is still very satisfying.
Then there's the franchise mode, where you can take charge of a team and take them through a full NFL season, from pre-season games (which can be simulated) all the way to the superbowl. You control everything from drafts, starting players and signing players.
There are tonnes of options here and there really is something for everyone of all levels of ability. Whilst initially calling the plays during the game can seem pretty daunting if you don't know much about the game, there is the ever useful john madden on hand to give advice on which play you should go with. Using this you can pretty quickly get a grip of what to do during different situations and eventually you'll start calling all the plays yourself. There's nothing more satisfying than completely outfoxing your opponents to make up big yardage or get into the endzone for a touchdown.
All the action takes place with the camera behind the line of scrimmage, so you'll snap the ball to your quarterback and depending on the play you've called he'll either hand it off to your running backs, whom you then take control of and have to find a way through the defence, or your receivers will set off on their runs with an X, Square, Circle etc over their heads, which you press to pass to them. There is a knack to this, you need to get used to reading where the open receivers are if you're going to have any real success but it comes pretty quickly with a bit of practice.
All in all a very complete and well polished game with no noticeable (to me) bugs and a lot of replayability. It's very easy to pick it up for a quick 20 minute online game if you have a bit of spare time.
Thoroughly reccomended for anyone with even a mild interest in american football.
Really good, but could be better September 11, 2009 Mr. J. R. Noble 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Madden 10 is a great game with lots of things to keep you busy and occupied. However there are some things which stop this from being a 5/5 game which include:
1. Wide Receivers still run out of bounds for no reason, its just unnecessarily irritating.
2. Commentary is pretty dull
3. Some of the Cut screens are not finished (some just leave your screen one colour for no reason, some weird clipping happens).
4. Be a Pro Mode feels shallow
The reasons that game is better now include:
1. A more real feeling game of American Football
2. New pile up and pro tack system improve things and make the game more realistic
3. Generally more and better cut screens to interlink the play
4. The Quarterbacks have more distinct styles (they are slower and feel more realistic), they have improved the pocket protection so that staying in the pocket is now a better option
5. They have been harsh with ratings. Average players are now rated around 70 making your elite players more important and giving them more of an edge.
6. I just find myself getting less frustrated with Madden 10, it just feels better and stops you from shouting at the TV as the AI blockers and WR generally act more sensibly and don't just stand there for no reason while 5 guys blitz your QB (this still happens but a lot less regularly).
So all in all it is a good game. Would I recommend it to someone who has Madden 09? Erm...... Yes. Its not a massive upgrade but if like me you had gotten fed up with 09 this will get you back interested, it is a vastly improved game all be it still not perfect.
