I'm rating this game based on the Japanese version June 29, 2009 Vincent Ng 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Some of you may have already know, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is the same as Monster Hunter Portable 2G over in Japan. However, since:
1. The game is in a different language
2. Versions were protected by regions
3. Saves can not be transfered from Japan into Europe (an vice verser)
4. Multiplayer mode doesn't work if ther versions were different.
They called it MHFU in Europe and US instead.
Questions you may have asked is: what makes MHFU different from MHF2?
1. You can carry over all of your items and equipments from your previous Monster Hunter 2 Freedom's Save.
2. There's 9 new monster in MHFU
3. In Single player mode, you can take a cat with you during your mission. (My favourate is a cat which uses bomb lol).
4. Once you were into G Missions, almost every Monster gets a new move.
5. Smacking a monster on it's head with a hammer now accompanies a star effect (so you know you are hitting the right spot). Once you smack the head for a sufficient number of times, you can actually stun the monster for bit of laugh. (Not to mention you have created a valuable opportunities for other players so deal with serious damage to whatever you were killing).
6. Enhancement in Hunter Stats (which recordes the number of different type of weapons you have used and so on).
7. Added multi-hunting missions so you'll need to take on 2 - 5 different monsters in the same mission (but its like one monster after another). (E.g. In one of you mission, you'll need to take down Tigrex then Rajing. Rejing only appears after Tigrex is dead).
I've completed my MHP2 by using 350 hours. With MHP2G, I've bring my save upto 650 hours. So in another word, there's still plenty you can do in MHFU.
Lastly, a bit of advice. For those of who wanting to play this game in multi-player mode but having trouble to find people to play with: You can grab yourself a PLANEX Wi-Fi USB Adapter. By using this adaptor plus a software called "Xlink Kai", you can actually link your PSP to anyone else across the world and join a multi-player game as you wish.
THe USB adaptor cost anything from 12 to 20 pounds but XLink is absolutely FREE. It could be a bit tricky to setup with (coz you'll need to change your PSP channel, open 2 ports in your routers and change some of your wireless USB settings). But it does seriously enhance your gameplay experience.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP)
I have been a fan of the franchise since the release of Monster Hunter Freedom 1,
This game is definitely worth getting!
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is one of my favourite games to date and this is why...
-Non repetitive gameplay (I noticed someones review said that it's repetitive, not a chance, you just didn't play it enough)
-I've spent almost 600+ hours on this game!
-Multiplayer is extremely fun and brings back memories of LAN multiplayer games (Back when consoles like the N64 were around) making it alot more soaciable.
-Variety within the scenary (Forest and Hills, Volcano, Snowy Mountains, Jungle, Great Forest, Desert and many more!)
-Hugely rewarding! I can't tell you the amount of satisfaction taking down a monster with your friends is!
-A fantastic online community! Everyone who uses Xlink Kai (Networking software for PSP and other consoles) will help you, after all, they're all there to hunt!
However...
-The game contains the vast majority of things that are in Monster Hunter Freedom 2, which is a shame due to the fact that I wanted something new from the game, but instead I got the same experience as I did from Monster Hunter Freedom 2 but bigger.
-This game is not as fun when you're playing it by yourself, get a friend to play, it's where the fun really is.
An overall fantastically fun game with many places to explore, a HUGE variety of monsters to kill with your friends, a long lasting and rewarding experience.
Monster hunter freedom unite December 25, 2009 pedro liberal 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this game after testing the first monster hunter for the PSP.
This review is not supposed to be a detailed overview, or anything like that. I had some questions and doubts, and so after having them answered I figured other people might need help also.
And so:
You need 5.00 firmware. If you do not have it, the UMD will prompt you to install it, as is with all other games, the firmware update comes with the game itself.
The game has no story. If you play final fantasy because of the immersive, 50 hour span story, then this game is not for you.
Everything begins and ends at the same city. There are over 400 quests and mission, and more for you to download through online network.
You develop you character by creating new armour, items, and weapons, the only level in this game are the ranks.
In order to advance in rank, you have to complete all missions or quest of the previous rank.
You can capture or kill monsters, it's up to you.
Capturing wields more items, while killing them is easier, but you are left with whatever the monster ends up dropping. The end result is the same, you only kill monsters in order to get items.
A monster challenge December 3, 2009 Philip S. Gunns (Berkshire, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Monster Hunter is a game that combines the mentality of two very successful types of game. One is the third-person, quick-reaction, boss-battling sensibilities of a game like Tomb Raider or even Mario 3d, while the other is the weapon-upgrading, loot-collecting grind of a game like Diablo or a modern MMO like WoW.
Between these two, Monster Hunter has carved a distinct niche of its own, giving players an immersive feel of a hunter of the very biggest game - huge beasts and dragons. These screen-dominating monsters are rendered in impressive style and will not hestitate to smash your poor hunter around, burn them with fireballs, freeze them with icy breath or stomp them with giant feet.
To take down these great beasts Capcom gives your hunter a great variety of weapons to even the odds, from huge two-handed swords to giant hammers, lances, bows, guns and more. Each of the weapons has a unique feel and different moves, and you can stick with a favorite or master all of their strengths and weaknesses in your hunting.
Your hunter does not only have his sword and his wits to keep him alive, he can also use a massive variety of tools and equipment on his hunts, from healing potions and refreshing drinks to flash bombs and pit traps to stun and snare monsters.
Your hunts take place in graphically beautiful and varied environments, from snowy mountains to fiery volcanoes, through forests and swamps along the way. Each of these poses its own challenges to the hunter, from freezing cold to dry heat, and often you will be fighting the environment as much as the monsters.
Gathering materials from the environment and from defeated monsters you can also make and modify your own weapons, and this becomes half the fun, knowing that the next beast you might down will give you access to a bigger and more powerful blade, or a tougher piece of armour.
You will need all of the above plus quick reactions, careful planning and a little luck to beat the game, because it can be vary hard and unforgiving at times. It makes you work and it makes you learn, but everything is beatable, and the feeling of achievement when you finally take down a particularly difficult brute is massive.
As befits a game which is on its second or thrd iteration, the whole package feels very slick and polished, with plenty of options and rewards, and loads of different monsters to keep your busy. Between the game's difficulty and the variety of missions there are hundreds of hours of challenge here, but crucially for a portable game, it can still be played easily in half an hour to an hour chunks.
If it has one drawback it is that it will occasionally make you tear your hair out in frustration, and for that reason I had to drop it a star in the fun stakes. But like all great games, you will blame your own mistakes rather than the game's design, and come back for one more go.
Overall, this is a tremendous game and a tremendous advert for the PSP. 5 Stars.
Making you come back for more November 27, 2009 A. Bowers 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Unlike any other modern game I have played this has to be the hardest. That is why I have spent many hours of the day playing it getting more then a little frusrated trying to take down from new wyvern and getting my hide handed to me by one I as yet still don't know how to beat just yet. I have had this game for a few weeks now and still I have only just unlocked the HR5 urgrent event.
The feeling of when you have beaten that accursed wyverns or Elder Dragon that proved to be such a bane in your side is thoroughly rewarding. With the different styles of weapons there comes the different play styles and ways of taking down the beasties along with a wide range of armour, such as with the weapons, to make and drive you near insane trying to break some bits off a wyvern or elder dragon just to be able to make it.
This game is a challenge though and though, and as I heard other remarked before I consider this the game the PSP was made for.
