5 out of 5 stars Definitive Turtle Beach XLC Review   December 17, 2009

The newly released Turtle Beach XLCs from - you guessed it - Turtle Beach, is their attempt at making an affordable alternative to the high-end headsets on the market while still maintaining great quality. Well you're probably wondering if it's worth your hard earned money, so read on and find out.

Headset Quality - Well honestly the XLCs do not look expensive. I've got quite a few headsets and closed-back headphones that look cool, and what I think is appealing about them is having some massive and awesome 'phones to wear, in comparison the XLC has a slim design with smaller ear pads than normal.

Headset Sound Quality - I have to say the sound quality of the XLC was average. I tested the headset on Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and I found the clarity and general quality to be pretty good, everything from the explosions of combat and the rattling gunfire came out well. I also found that Turtle Beach made good on their promise of noise-cancellation as the XLCs don't really leak sound like other padded headphones.

The only downside to it is the sound is a little distant which isn't that noticeable, and the headsets sound output isn't huge. This is probably due to the absence of the amp in the XLCs like the X1s, so you can turn up the volume and yes it'll be loud but it's not going to blow your head off. So gamers who like to play their games on a deafening volume or play survival horrors with the eerie music immersing them in the game might not be that impressed.

A great redeeming feature however is hearing your friends and the game sound on multiplayer games through your headset. Just on a side-note you have a master volume for both voice and game sound on the headset, which means you have to tweak the individual in-game volume and voice volume on your 360 to find a good balance, I usually go for high voice volume and a lower in-game volume, and also remember to set your voice settings to play voice output "through both".

Voice Chat Quality - There's not much to say here, your voice output will be loud and clear to other players. I tested it with a friend and he commented that it was better clarity than the old standard 360 headset I used to talk through.

Comfort - The ear pads are soft like a very soft cat's paw, yeah it really is that soft. I've used them a couple of times now and they feel wonderfully comfortable on my ears. However if you play for extended periods it does still suffer from making your ears ache a bit.

Value for Money - This headset is great value for money, because it does the job well. If you don't want to spend a fortune on high-end headsets but want an upgrade from your basic headset or are just replacing a broken standard 360 headset, then this is the one to go for. In fact now this has released, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO BUY ANOTHER STANDARD 360 HEADSET as for a couple of quid more you can get the XLCs which let you hear voice and in-game sound through a proper headset.

In Conclusion - It's a must have headset for 360 gamers.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds Good to Me!   February 6, 2010

This headset ticks all the boxes in all the right ways. First off, the sound is great: a good range with good bass, and compared to the sound from my TV, every game feels just so much more atmospheric. Everything just sounds better, I wear them now even when I don't have to! :) That brings me to my second big plus, they are just so comfortable. I have a couple of different voip headsets, and none of them are comfortable to wear for long durations. The turtle beach headset, well, you could wear it all day, every day, and they wouldn't bother you at all. I especially like how cushioned they feel.

All in all, probably one of the best headsets I've ever had, in every regard. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this headset to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Instant improvement to my gaming scores!   March 11, 2010

I was pointed towards this product by another Xbox live user. I was a bit sceptical at first but when the product arrived today and after a mere 15 minutes of using them - I managed to get by an area I had struggled doing so (and for some time) on Realistic level in the game Rainbow Six Vegas 2.

The sound quality is AWESOME! I was able to hear what direction the 'Tango's' (the baddies) were approaching me from as was with the same for the direction that they were firing at me from too. Finally got that sniper hidden away right at the top of that tower that even with a x12 scope on a sniper rifle you are armed with yourself - looks like the size of a pinhead!

No wonder I could not find him! Being able to hear the directions of his shots pinpointed him almost instantly :-)

As it comes with phono jacks those of you that have a separate amplifier/sound system/phono red and white outputs too, you can connect and have feed of your music/other devices coming through (at the same time you are playing games if you want to) in true stereo sound - so two products in one!

The only thing that concerns me today, is the level of their construction. As an adult, I can see that these will not take that kindly to being manhandled so long term survivability is an obvious issue for me. An accident involving `sitting on them' etc., will break this product and way too easily in my estimation.

The spoken word, very muffled with the mono headset Xbox provide you with, is absolutely crystal clear too.

Pleased with the product? You bet I am!

4 out of 5 stars How to Set up XLC to use.   December 26, 2009

Some important info on how to set up the XLC for Xbox 360 for all those people like me that have kids and don't have a clue. when you follow the instructions on the back of the box on how to connect these headphones one thing they don,t tell you is to alter the settings on the xbox itself, here's how. Go into Xbox settings, preferences, voice, then click play through both, then adjust the volume to what you want. Now weve done his the head phone work great and my son is happy.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the price!   June 23, 2010

the headset is really good value for money, the game sounds are excellent quality, and after balancing the game and chat volumes, the chat is also really clear and neither seem to drown each other out.

the ear cusions are really comfortable and cancel out all external noise. Great if you want to be compleatly immersed in a game! (quite often dont hear the phone ringing though haha). Can cause ears to ache a litte after really long periods but rarely.

good length of cable to move around so you dont have to be right in frount of the TV. really good quality mic (friends can hear your voice very clearly). And the mic boom is really flexible and can be placed to suit any preferance.

overall there arent really and negatives i can think of, and for the relatively low price, they are fantastic and well worth the money.
