4 out of 5 stars not bad   March 15, 2010
Larewen Evenstar (Renfrewshire)
I must say, this is a great idea, and is really motivational. I find myself doing more walking, just to reach my targets. This is a great little game for anyone who really wants to make an effort at eating healthily, excersising more etc

it has it's down points though:

1. The pedometer is huge, and really quite unweildy. It isn't easy to conceal on your trouser belt, it's just too chunky! the clip doesn't stay attached to the main pedometer that easily, and i keep finding it comes off, especially if i'm wearing trousers with thicker material. I keep an eye on it, just to make sure it hasn't fallen off.

2. It's food balance goals are way off! It measures food in energies (50 calories per energy), it tells you roughly how many you should be eating per day, based on the amount of exersize you did that day. Problem is, I am trying to lose weight, not maintain it, or gain it. So based on the amount of exersize I do of an average day, it tells me I should be eating between 2100 and 3000 calories, which is rubbish! (as per doctors orders, I'm on 1500 a day), so i'd take the food balance with a pinch of salt!

3. The challenges for each day are good, but they can become a bit repetative, they tend to give you the same ones over and over, unless you update your coaching sessions.

But all in all, this is a good game, if you ignore the food balance. You can learn to live with the pedometer, and just redo challenges, or not do them. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to try and improve their weight and health, as it tells you your BMI, and gives you lots of useful hints and tips.

4 out of 5 stars Nice little coach helps you to a healthier lifestyle   February 3, 2010

It's not a game, it's a health monitor. During the day a pedometer tracks your movement. At the end of the day you put the pedometer in your Nintendo DS. A way to cheery little man monitors your movements and asks you what you've done with other movements, like sporting. It asks you what you've eaten, and it challenges you to do something extra, for instance it encourages you to walk to the shop instead of taking the car.

I'm using it four weeks now, and indeed, I've lost about 3 kilo weight, just as any diet advisor woud advise. Without any dieting. So I guess it's working.

One of the few disadvantages are that it is fairly American lifestyle oriented. It assumes that it is normal to eat take-out food almost every day. It encourages you to make your own dinner at home. On the continent that is normal behaviour.

Another annoying thing is that on one hand it is meant to be used at the end of the day, so your total food intake and total exercise can be taken into account, on the other hand it asks you to do some things which you normally wouldn't do late at night, like eating a raw carrot, or do some exercise.

4 out of 5 stars To partake or not   January 18, 2010

Although this is a bit large, it is interesting to use. Gives you all the information you need.
My main bug bear is that it kept dropping off my belt and the grey rubber thing that protects the computer readier bit kept getting knocked off when going to the loo etc., until I lost it altogether after about 3 months use. Getting a replacement was out of the question as they [Nintendo] never answered my e-mails!
Then the inevitable happened when the unit dropped off my belt, slid into the road and got run over by a passing car. Hence the reason I am buying another unit - I really think it is worth replacing.

3 out of 5 stars Is more for Kids   January 9, 2010
H. Anders (Bristol, UK)
This is a good game but for Kids not for adults, the pedometer is massive aswell. I gave up on this and bought Carol Vordamans which is a million times better.

4 out of 5 stars Good if you don't take it too seriously   November 5, 2009

Those of us who need to manage our weight know very well what we need to do - use some common sense, don't overeat and take a bit of exercise. If you're prepared to do this, then the My Health Coach game is a good tool to keep you motivated and help you enjoy the process of getting slimmer and fitter. It is not meant to be a serious training or diet coaching tool, and I think that anyone who tried to take it that seriously would find the game a big disappointment. Accept it for what it is and you can have some fun and help yourself to make progress towards your goals.
I enjoy using the game a lot; some of the challenges are not relevant to my life, but I can pick and choose the ones that best suit me. Also the recording of your daily food intake cannot possibly be pin point accurate, but never mind, it's a broad overview you're looking at not a highly detailed dietician's report. I take off one star because, yes, the pedometer is very unwieldy, and although it's nice to plug it in to your DS and get an accurate step count, I've given up, use a small pedometer and input my steps manually. Since starting with My Health Coach I've definitely become more active, found small ways to make my lifestyle healthier and had some fun in the process, so I think it's a good buy. Don't expect it to change your life in big ways, but set out simply to use and enjoy it, and I think you'll find it worthwhile.
