Very pleased March 29, 2009 M. Hall (UK) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
Firstly I would like to describe how I am using this product. I dock my 2nd generation iPod touch into it, and I have the Official Apple Composite Cable plugged into the back. This then runs to my AV splitter, sending the audio to my HiFi and the video to my TV, as well as having the USB plug going into a USB Power Adapter on the wall. It just makes life so easily - just stick your iPod in, turn on your HiFi to listen to music (whilst it charges your iPod) or turn your TV and HiFi on and enjoy a cinema experience for your movies.
The latest version of this item comes with 8 dock adapters - numbers 9-17 in case you're interested. Solid construction as you would expect and the surface which is made of rubber means the dock will stay wherever it is placed. Compared to the previous version, the remote receiver on the front has been scaled down dramatically and is now just a horizontal oval slit. The iPod shuffle like remote works well from across the room. Just note that the Menu button doesn't work with the iPod (not that I needed that anyway.)
Although I don't use it for this purpose, the dock can also sync with your computer. Oh, and in case any of you were wondering, it outputs audio either via the dock connector or Line out 3.5mm jack without USB power.
The perfect accompanyment to the Apple Component AV-Cable August 1, 2008 Neil Keogh (United Kingdom) 18 out of 21 found this review helpful
I recently purchased myself a set of official Apple Component AV-Cable leads so I could store and watch videos on my iPod for when I went on holiday or stayed at a hotel ect.
I have owned my iPod Component AV-Cables for a few weeks now and would have to recommend them hands down to absolutely anyone who is looking for a perfect solution to watching movies on the go. The picture quality is great on dvd's converted from disc so long as you have decent software and most movies take up no more than 1gb (2gb max) The only thing which is a bit of pain in the butt is having to use the iPod to use functions such as fast forward, rewind play ect because the AV-Cable isn't ideally as long as it could be, also the controls for fast forward and rewind can be fiddly on the iPod and if you accidently press too hard, it goes right back to the start of the film which is extremely anoying.
After looking on Apple's website, it was relief to find that Apple actually made a docking station which comes complete with a quite cool little remote.
Basically the Apple Universal Dock is a docking station which you can place any iPod model into whilst charging, transfaring files and watching videos with your iPod.
The unit has a connector input at the back of the unit which you can slot your USB, Component or Composite AV-Cable into.
Personally I ordered this product mainly for the purpose of being able to control video play of movies on my iPod via the remote, but it can also be use for listing to music whilst connected to your stereo, interacting with Apple TV and much more.
I would definitely recommend this little unit if you can find it cheap enough, I picked mine up from a Amazon Market Seller for just £15 which is a bargian
Very good quality if slightly limited dock March 30, 2010 P Sussex (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this dock to plug into my wife's Technics stereo system. Although you can just use a cable direct from the Ipod's 3.5 output jack or the 30-pin dock connector and plug it into the sytems stereo input jacks, it is fiddly and not really for the technically challenged. With this dock permanently connected to the input jacks of the stereo (through either the stereo jack or the 30-pin dock connector on the dock) all you have to do is drop your Ipod (and its appropriate adaptor) into the dock and away you go. You also have the added benefit of being able to connect it to a mains outlet so that your Ipod charges whilst in position (and whilst you are listening to it) and you can control it with the included remote (be warned, however, the remote only stops and starts tracks, and controls the volume of the Ipod - the menu button does not control the menu on the Ipod. The remote is fully functional for other Apple devices such as Mac computers and Apple TV, this is great for me as I have a Macbook in need of a remote!). With good quality cables the sound is excellent
All in all I think this is a great little device, it is well made and looks "classy". It now means that my wife can listen to her Ipod Nano through the stereo system with the minimum of fuss and I can do likewise with my 5th generation video Ipod. You can also use it to connect to your computer, just a power outlet or to a TV or other video device using the appropriate cables. Be warned though; you have to use the correct cables from Apple (or simillar approved ones) to be able to use this feature or it will not work. The Apple cables are not cheap and can cost as much as the dock. It is for this reason, and the lack of full functionality of the remote, that I have docked (see what I did there?) a star from the score.
a rotten apple in the works???? May 13, 2009 George E. mingham (uk) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
this dock is amazing very good. but its what apple are doing that annoys me.
i will start from the beginning i brought my girlfriend one of the new ipod nano`s (4G) any way it didnt work with this dock nor her official apple wall charger.
as the new ipod touch and nano(4g) have firmware to tell them to only work with the new apple accessory
i can no longer watch movies on my tv from my ipod touch as my dock is the older type yet the dock will work with my sisters ipod video.
in my live i have had an ipod mini all of the nanos ever made 30 and 60gb video and an ipod touch, thats a lot of money on ipods and apple want me to buy a dock for each one??? just because the new ipods have some firmware saying only work with the new dock so apple customers will have to buy it...
i hope you will find some useful info on here
also apple are trying to sell the chip to third party companies to get more money which will put the price of even third party accessories up.
