Absolutely brilliant! December 1, 2008 J. Delaney 105 out of 107 found this review helpful
This is without doubt the best satnav on the market at the moment. The maps are clear, the screen info can be customised, the choice of voices is good (male/female) and programming an address is easy - especially as you can simply enter a postcode. Other useful information is "places of interest" where it will give you details of places near your destination or on the route such as restaurants, tourist attractions, etc. with telephone numbers and more.
I had a Garmin before and this knocks the spots of it. The people who run it down have obviously never had satnav before and if it is your first one it does take some getting used to the instructions. For example when it says "turn right in 400 yards" you have to watch the countdown to 400 yards if you are no good at judging distances because there could be another right turning in 200 yards which you may well take by mistake. All the wrong turnings are user errors not the satnav which is absolutely brilliant and has taken me all over Europe on many many occasions with absolutely no problems whatsoever. And an added bonus is the warning sound when there is a speed camera or when you are going over the speed limit in a given area - and this works all over Europe too!
TomTom One XL with Western Europe Map, NOT UK & ROI September 23, 2008 J. Kearney (Spain & Ireland) 76 out of 78 found this review helpful
I bought this product in Spain, driving back to Ireland through France.
The quality of the map in Spain and France is very good. I had several customer meetings both in Madrid and Paris suburbs and the device got me there every time in the time scale predicted. The traffic camera alerts were useful and accurate.
Once I got back to Ireland, I found the device to be pretty good, but not as accurate detail as in Continental Europe. There are no traffic camera alerts as far as I can tell. I was looking to plan a trip to Northern Ireland and there are some details lacking on the map, since I could not find the place names.
This is, I think, the difference between getting the UK & ROI map and the Western Europe Map. If you're looking for such detail in both regions, you should invest in both maps to install on your device.
I liked the Tom Tom Home software which gives you the ability to update the map details and also to personalise the device, e.g. put a security code on it. I have already replaced the arrow icon with an image of my car. I also found an excellent freeware software "Tyre", that allows you to plan trips using Google Maps and then download them into the device.
An excellent piece of kit. June 9, 2009 Mr. A. F. Carroll (UK) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
This is an excellent piece of kit. Bought it to go abroad through France and was very impressed with it. It worked out routes very quickly and though I was puzzled by the route it took when I checked on the map it was right and chose the best routes. It saved me a load of time and with its speed camera alerts probably saved its purchase cost on one trip. the area of France I went to I have not been for four years and they seem to have gone speed camera mad. It warned me in good time and French speed cameras are much harder to spot than ours.
It warned me well in advance of directions to go, any wrong turns I made it worked out an alternative route very quickly. It picked up signals quick and attachment to window is solid. There were one or two occasions where the maps did not match real life but this seemed to be remote small areas of France where they had obviously made recent changes and not uploaded the changes.
An excellent piece of equipment, I would thoroughly recommend it.
Tom Tom is the best and easiest !! August 15, 2008 Mr. Peter Kitching (Cambridge, England) 51 out of 53 found this review helpful
Virtually every review I have seen on the Tom Tom XL says it is the best and easiest to use product of its type on the market.
Having just bought one and started to use it, I have to agree.
Although there is precious little in the way of a manual in the box, you just don't need it - everything you need is on the screen!!
