Great device - if a little geeky June 16, 2009 Mr. C. Kennedy 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
As a 25,000 miles a year driver, sat nav is essential. Previously had a built in sat nav in the car, but my new car didnt have the option so I had to buy a stand alone unit. Went for this model as I also drive in the US (switching between US and Europe maps is really easy and you also specify a 'Home' for the US map separately).
No doubt there may be problems with defective units, but I feel that a lot of the negative comments relate to the complicated nature of the device. There are a lot of features and I feel that you do have to be very comfortable with using such devices if you are going to get the most benefit from the unit.
For me the live updates are invaluable and have used the cheapest fuel feature to save money, and google to add favourites that were not easy to find the adddress of. Also the IQ predictor of arrival times is uncanny ... recently predicting a hour journey almost to the minute.
I have also had no problems with connecting my phone and using the FM transmitter.
In summary very happy with this device.
Amazing July 16, 2009 The manager (East mids, UK) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have had a road angel 7000 for years which was ideal for me as a business traveller - lots of miles and want to know where the cameras are ! however the maps werent great and the functionality wasnt the best. When I found out Tomtom had signed up for the camera data it seemed like a perfect match.
I plumbed for the 940 because I travel a lot including the US and for a few bob more over the 740 it isnt a hardship.
What do i like..
- GPS pickup is amazing - less than 10 secs and your on
- Liveupdate / traffic updates etc every 3 mins means i get diverted round every traffic jam - ok it costs me 7.99 a month but its better than sitting on the M6 for 2 hrs more than i need to watching the central reservation...
- IQ routes - simply amazing, the thing actually learns your quick routes so if your a local and know the country lanes are quicker than the main routes after 1 or 2 trips it will teach itself to go your quick way ! I understand it anonymously updates to the main server too so I guess I am getting the best from everyone else too ! Gone are the days when I have to ignore my sat nav for the first 20mins of a trip because its talking rubbish..
- google search - cracking for finding the next McDonalds or Halfords on your route rather than having to rely on motorway service stations or similar..
- updates are easy as is using the unit, so basic even my wife could use it...
- its quick.... very quick....
The weather and petrol prices is a bit gimmicky - but they do work as does the Voice recognition - have given it a go, novel and works but limited appeal. Phone bluetooth is fine also - a useful add on if you have to use the phone when driving
All in all a cracking unit...
As an aside if you have the LIVE update stuff paid for then you wont need the TMC cable addition for the UK. The live is better and updates more than the TMC. TMC is only of real use in Europe or the US where LIVE isnt currently in place.... although I noted LIVE is due to be rolled out for the rest of the EU soon ..... brilliant....

TomTom GO 940 Satellite Navigation System - LIVE Worldwide
This is my second Tom Tom, and I must say at the outset that I cannot do without it now. The new Tom Tom 940 Live is a very good product, with enough added value from my previous Go 300 to be worth buying. Mainly, it "does what it says on the tin" very efficiently, although on the downside the "Live" part of the system has to be paid for after 3 months, and will only be worthwhile to those of us that do a great deal of miles and need to save time.
However, getting some of the more specialised features working is largely trial and error because of the lack of available information. Having said that, the standard navigation experience on the 940 is greatly improved, and I'm very happy with it.
There is an issue with what you get in the box, which is pretty minimal, and especially in terms of adequate information. I wanted to put an 8 GB microSD card in my 940 so that I could fill it with my music collection and then transmit to my car radio. I could find only minimal information on the Tom Tom website about this, and there was nothing about music or SD cards in the box except how to set up the wireless transmission, although it mentions in the book a technical support document for downloading, which I can't find on the site.
All in all a good product, but with a few letdowns in terms of information.
Great SatNav July 25, 2009 A. LYNCH (London,UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Worked straight out of the box. Quick delivery. Was able to successfully install a 16GB memory card to have all my music via either bluetooth or FM radio, dependong on vehicle. works well as handsfree or music player as well as being an excellent Satnav. good for safety cameras and traffic jams and even walking/hiking. used in europe, faultlessly, although no google search i France or Switzerland yet. easy to use and update via internet. Superb!!
Tom Tom 940 Live June 25, 2009 Belamba (Poole, UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I had a Tom Tom 300 Go and it gave good service for years, so decided to upgrade to the 940 Live and have not been disappointed! Does all it says on the box, the live traffic feature is really useful, and the fact that this sat nav gets connected to the satellite in milliseconds unlike the 300 which took forever! The voice feature is a bit shakey at times, but am still able to understand what I'm being told.
The fee for continuing the Live service after 3 months seems a little steep, at £2 a week.
Feel for the money a case could have been included; one was included with older models.
Very easy to navigate your way around this model, with lots of handy options to choose from.
All in all I'm really happy with my 940 Live - a worthwhile investment. Would recommend to anyone wanting a sat nav that does it all and then some!
