As a first time user of a GPS system for a car or ground transport, I must recommend the TomTom 1 as an excellent piece of equipment, well worth having in getting you to where you wish to go, and keeping you informed at all times clearly, and, where you are at that moment. Invaluable for emergency use and for finding those hidden turns. All in all, most certainly well worth having and excellent value!
I would also recommend Amazon highly for excellent back-up where necessary. I couldn't get the TomTom to switch on, which I suspect was my fault - read the instructions closely!!! - and when contacting Amazon I couldn't have received better help. It did come on when I did what the instructions recommended.

Must get a v4, a lot more portable than v3. Very friendly audio instructions. Don't see much point to buy a more expensive tomtom. You might probably only get a wider screen for a much higher price.

TomTom ONE v4 Satellite Navigation System with Great Britain Mapping Good product, easy to use, good price, although the differences between the various versions of this product are not easy to work out from the details supplied . The new fixing bracket is a huge improvement on the old one. Much easier to operate , compact easy to remove and take the whole thing with you rather than leaving behind the old style bracket which might tempt thieves to break into your car to see whether your sat nav is in the glovebox. Make sure you get this.

This may be useful if you do not use your ONE v4 for more than a week and wish to conserve battery life.
Apparently the Power button on the top of the ONE v4 is used to switch the unit ON or put it in STANDBY mode. It does not actually switch off the ONE. This is why the ONE v4 starts so quickly normally.
The unit will continue to draw battery power even when in Standby mode. The battery may be depleted after a week or three when using v8.01x software.
ONE v3 owners have reported similar problems and the solution is to reset the unit if you wish to switch it off (Resetting does not delete or change settings)
To switch off (reset) the ONE v4:
Switch on the unit first as you would normally do.
Once it is running, now hold the power button down for exactly 15 seconds.
The unit will now switch off.
(Do not hold the button down for more than 18-20 seconds because the unit will come back on!)
To check the unit is switched off, press the Power button for no more than 1 second. The unit should remain 'Off'.
To switch the unit back on from its fully powered Off state:
hold the power button down for around 3-4 seconds.
The unit should now start up.
You should see the TomTom logo and hear the familiar drums.
It will take up to a minute to start up.

This is my first sat-nav device, and I am impressed.
This unit will mainly be used for leisure travel, and commuting thirty miles to work. It has some useful features like avoidance of road blockages and alternative routes.
The integrated mounting sucker is a great idea, as the whole lot can be removed from the car without leaving evidence of the device (which I believe thieves look out for). A couple of times, the sucker came unstuck, but I think that was down to a dirty windscreen.
If you want to use a sat-nav in a driving job, perhaps a more advanced model with bigger screen might be better, but this one is fine for me.
Overall, I would recommend this. Best price from Amazon, of course.
Additional comment: I've knocked off a star, because it can take a good few minutes from power-up to locate a satellite signal. A minor annoyance.
