5 out of 5 stars Sports headphones that work!   December 11, 2008

I have tried other "sports" headphones (the ones that hook over the top of your ear) and they just don't stay in place while running. These, on the other hand, are FANTASTIC!

I received them a day before I took part in a 15k cross country race - a perfect opportunity to test them thoroughly! They didn't move an inch once I'd put them on - excellent! Given that they were so cheap they sounded pretty good too. This was probably because they fitted so well and stayed there throughout the race. The provided cable clip is handy too.

Great sports headphones that actually stay in place. This is an excellent price also (They still sell the older green PMX70 model in my local Apple reseller for £39.99!)

4 out of 5 stars Quality at the right price   December 28, 2008

Just to set the scene, I bought these as I found that the in-ear type constantly fall out at the gym, or get caught on my jacket on the train and get tugged out.

I had some initial concerns with the fit as it felt like they weren't sitting in my ear, and was somewhat paranoid about noise bleed (predominantly as I hate other peoples tinny second hand music), but with some experimentation found that there is little escape.

The sound is deep and rich, much more bass than the i-clone headphones, comfortable (once you get used to them), surprisingly discrete given the colour as most of the headset sits beneath you neckline.

I looked at a large number of headphones including the ugly highly rated ones - you'll find them on Amazon if you look, but these, for me are spot on at this price, highly recommended.

They lose a star, for no other reason than they don't fit as well in the pocket as in-ears, but I'm clutching at that down side.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Headphones   December 25, 2008

These really are the best headphones I have ever purchased, and I have owned numerous pairs. All of the pairs I have bought before I have used to listen to music while out running, and frankly, all were useless. None would actually stay in my ears without coming out, and while they were of good sound quality e.g. the iPod in-ear headphones, they just wouldn't secure in place without at least coming out once during a run.

For all you runners out there, these headphones are a dream. You know how annoying it is for them to come out and then have to replace them into your ear while running. They stay firmly in your ear due to a little band of sturdy plastic which connects both of them around the back of your head, aswell as clipping over the ears which ensures they will stay in place.

The sound quality is also brilliant, giving good bass response. One word of warning though, once they are in your ears and you are listening to music, you will find it is very hard to hear anything of the outside world! Though I judge this as a good thing as I run in parks and don't need to worry about anything that requires special attention e.g. traffic.

Recommended 5*

3 out of 5 stars They stay on. They hurt a bit. They could sound better.   June 7, 2009

Sennheiser says these have a "vertical transducer system." They appear to be referring to the fact that the plugs are upright. As I've mentioned elsewhere, that's like calling a book a "horizontal cellulose system." Innovative!

I use these with an iPod Shuffle, been doing so for a few months. These phones will stay jammed in your ears while you're jogging, that's what the behind-the-neck band is for. So far, sweat has not been an issue (though I've never damaged earphones with sweat). Whether you find them comfortable is an individual matter. There's no way to regulate the pressure. I had pain in my right ear, but the right ear bits have now become desensitized and I can wear them for about 45 minutes.

The phones have orangey bits of plastic on them, and if your're counting on that for visibility, you must be jogging in urban camouflage. There is a reflector strip on the neckband. If you're running in conditions where this is actually useful, you should A) be wearing a proper reflector vest, and B) not be plugged into music. Some very cynical gimmickry by Sennheiser there.

When the phones are broken in, the sound is pretty good. Treble is bright and detailed, bass is reasonably defined, but the sound as a whole feels a bit closed-in and wooly. No doubt this is partly due to the closed-back design.

Things I really appreciate about these phones is the single cord (though it's too long for my setup), and that they seem quite sturdy; and of course that they stay on my ears during all kinds of exercise (and now they don't hurt so much). The cable clip is a clever idea but the plastic is bittle; I used a thin screwdriver to extremely gently pry it so that I could get the cable in.

If your workouts involve a good deal of lying on your back with your head on the floor or bench, these won't work. They also don't work if you wear clothes with a high, stiff collar.

My gold standard for exercise phones is still the Koss KSC35, earclip phones with the same elements as the PortaPro. Four years on they still sound terriffic. These Sennheisers are a different concept, with some clever solutions, and maybe the compromises will work for you.

5 out of 5 stars well worth it   April 26, 2009

I got these headphones almost a week ago today. I was quite unsure about buying them at first as many people have said they are uncomfortable and that they shouldn't be used for long periods of time. I decided to go with my gut instinct and order them and they arrived two days later in perfect condition.
The eco-rugged style means that they come in a box thats basically a lot of cardboard bent into a case with a slip on cover. Inside I found: The headphones, some foam speaker covers (the small circular ones that used to come with ipods), a clip to fit on and some information about them. All of which was in perfect working order. The covers are quite hard to fit over the speakers at first as they are quite large speakers then are connected straight to the main frame. After putting everything on I then went out to test them.
I am a skateboarder and I bought the headphones so that they don't get yanked out of my ears every time a turn my head. I have quite large ears and in-ear headphones aren't very useful as they slip out. I had read about clip on headphones but they are apparently really uncomfortable and I really wanted some proper headphones that wouldn't keep falling out. I had received a new ipod a few days ago so I have some normal headphones but I decided to go with neckband heaphones and found that the PMX80 were the highest reviewed.
There headphones work perfectly with my ears. They are a perfect fit so they never fall out or get yanked out and I can now skate for a long time without being interrupted by headphones. In regards to some of the other issues raised - namely the uncomfortableness - I found that after a short time of wearing them in they are perfect. The headphones are slanted and point into your ears which would obviously cause some people to find them annoying. They have the same level if not better sound than general ipod headphones. I wouldn't recommend these for anything but sport as the headphones aren't practical on a day to day basis but if your a runner or enjoy a gym work out or maybe even skating like me, I would definitely advise these on the basis that they are a good fit. I wouldn't advise them for anyone with small ears as they are large speakers. I really love them so I have given them 5 stars
