 Great for a motorhome ! Great for anywhere really December 17, 2008

I bought one for my husband to use in the motorhome, its so dark in there and you can project it of the blinds its just great. Its easy to use, just wish they had supplied a ipod cable, luckly we had one. For us it worked straight out of the box without any problems or issues with focus wheels etc. It was simple to use really and the quality is great - pixels are not a issue.
We are using it for ipod movies, dvds, tv and also for presentations. It really is very good my only negative point is the speaker but you know for the size of it what do you expect. Just use headphones or a battery operated speaker I use my logitech ipod dock/speakers and it works great. It comes with a handy attachment to use a mini tripod which is a must and also a lovelly little leather case to keep it safe when not in use. LOVE IT!

Optoma PK101 Pico Projector
When I first heard about the arrival of pocket projectors I was very excited as I travel a great deal and much as I love my iPhone, there is no substitute for size when it comes a true cinema experience.
Not having seen a demo I bought blind but my expectations had been managed by several on-line reviews so I had some idea of what to expect.
Firstly the size, not much larger than a deck of playing cards which is amazing considering that it can project images up to 60 inches (which it genuinely can). The unit is attractive to look at but would have been even better with a metal housing.
Controls are limited to a very difficult to adjust focus control which is a bit all or nothing and a two stage brightness control. Sadly there is no volume control and the internal speaker always sounds stretched which is not surprising given how small it must be. I ended up using headphones which was much more satisfactory.
Now to the picture. The projector is best used in total darkness, anything less than this requires that you significantly reduce the projection size down to a few inches. The picture quality initially impresses but you soon come to realise that the projector simply does not have enough power and as a result the picture is quite dark. It will project up to the stated 60 inch size but I found it was happiest at around 32 to 40 inches. Colours are strong, perhaps too much so particularly reds in my experience, matters improved slightly however when using the less powerful of the two settings setting which resulted in more natural skin tones.
The unit comes with two batteries which take around 4 hours each to charge via the included USB lead and mains plug. Be warned however that it only comes supplied with a component lead so there is no out of the box iPod connectivity unles you already have cables of your own.
With great regret I am returning my unit. I think that this is a brilliant first try but the poor focus control, low quality sound and above all else, the rather gloomy picture let it down. I suspect that we will not have to wait too long for advances in the technology that will address the issues that I have experienced so perhaps best not to be an early adopter this time.
Please note that my review is based only upon iPhone connectivity as I did not have the opportunity to use it with other devices.

The thing you have to consider when you buy a Pico, is what are you going to use it for? Are you going to show off videos on the move? Are you going to use it ad-hoc to watch movies? Or are you going to replace your TV with it? If you are planning to replace your TV, then you'd be well advised to avoid this product. If you want to use it for the purpose for which it was designed, then you're in luck.
The Pico is a handy, lightweight device that has impressed an initially skeptical me. Whilst there are some minor niggles: sound too low, battery life, you have to remind yourself that this isn't meant to replace the HDTV in your front room. If you want to use it on the fly, then it's the perfect gadget for you.

The Pico is so brilliant in so many ways, allowing you to watch pictures or videos on the move, pretty much anywhere.
I've connected the Pico both an iPod touch, iPod nano, and Microsoft Zune, and on all three devices, the picture was far better than I expected, assuming a good quality video rip. The colours were good, and in total darkness we could easily watch a video of 50 or so inches. The battery life, while not stunning, easily went up to 1.5 hours on max brightness, and with 2 included batteries, chances are you'll be just fine.
The connection was incredibly straightforward, once I had the proper cables: a simple matter of plug and play.
The sound however, is absolutely miserable, and this is the most glaring omission on this product. Without a headphone jack, the only option you have for listening to movies is the completely miserable on board speaker. The quality is miserable, and on most rips, it was barely loud enough to watch with friends.
Thus, you'll probably need to connect it to an external speaker, but this is easier said than done. This brings us to the second problem with the device: the need to buy an outrageous amount of extra cables. Taking a look at my Pico and zune now, to connect it, I used the following:
the projector itself
The zune
One Zune/iPod composite video cable, to get the video and sound outputs from my zune
The composite-video in cable for the projector
the composite -> 3.5mm headphone jack cable, to allow me to output the volume on an external speaker
A speaker coupler to actually be able to connect the speaker.
That, is an outrageous amount of cabling for a supposedly portable device, and so you'll probably want to make a few visits to your local electronics store.
Connecting the projector to my laptop proved even more difficult: I had to purchase a composite to s-video cable, and even then I just didn't seem to be able to get it to work.
Now that I have the device working however, I'm very pleased. The only other glaring flaw is the inability to charge while watching a movie.

In the box you get the projector itself, an AV cable, with a 2.5mm 4 pole jack at one end and 3 female RCA connectors at the other.
You also get two 1100mah batteries, which is a good thing as although the stated battery life is 1.5hs, on full brightness you realistically only get about an hour per battery.
There is also a USB charger and USB to mini USB charging lead, which could do with being a touch longer.
Something I nearly overlooked and which I'm glad I didn't is the little adaptor that allows you to mount the projector on to any standard tripod plate.
On the right hand side you've got the AV in, the focusing wheel and the grill for the internal 0.5W speaker, which I might add is far from great. I compare it to the speaker on the 2G iPhone, if there is any sort of background noise you'll find it nearly impossible to decipher anything.
On the left you'll find the mini charging socket and the power on switch. There are two brightness settings, but I have been hard pushed to find any real difference between the two, hence I find myself using the lower setting just to save on power.
The first thing that struck me was just how small this thing really is. It's incredible to think that they managed to get a fully functioning DLP projector into such a small package! The dimensions are 50 x 103 x 15mm.
