Samsung NC20 is very good April 8, 2009 A.N.Other 38 out of 38 found this review helpful
I took delivery of my new NC20 just today, so while I can't say what it's like with extended use I already have a good idea - excellent. What a gorgeous little machine! This is an excellent mix of style and substance with great functionality. The build quality is excellent, very clean lines, very solid.
The initial setup process is very simple - simply charge the battery (only takes about an hour), and fire it up. It'll need a couple of reboots while it sorts out its restore partition etc, but once that's done you can crack on with using it.
The keyboard is just about the best laptop keyboard I've yet used. It's very quiet, with a smooth travel so it is great for quick typing. One slight quirk is that the Windows and context menu keys have been swapped over for some reason (even on the UK layout). I'm not sure why, but as others have suggested, these can be remapped.
The screen is fantastic - very clear, though it does need a bit of adjustment to the gamma etc. as its default settings are a little washed out. I also like that the NC20 has only a tiny black border around the edge of the screen so it pretty much goes right up to the bezel - no wasted space.
This is also a very quiet machine, and runs nice and cool. Even the hard disk seeking is essentially inaudible. I updated the BIOS, RAM and display drivers on arrival, but apart from that everything arrives with the latest versions. Networking XP Home to my Pro desktop was easy, although I did have some initial difficulty getting the wireless to work with WPA, but it's fine now.
Some users (on other sites) have bemoaned the single bar that acts as both mouse buttons, but it's really not problematic. It's soft, and flexible enough that both buttons can be pressed at the same time if need be, so it's really not a problem.
One nice thing is the lack of bloatware this laptop comes with. There's software for the webcam, a bunch of Samsung's own utilities where the majority are genuinely useful. There isn't really anything you don't need. The only items I've removed are McAfee Internet Security (it's only a trial version anyway and I have alternatives) and Adobe Reader, which can be ably replaced with Foxit Reader which is much smaller and faster and suited to this type of machine.
All in all, this notebook is a delight to use, stylish and just works brilliantly. If you're after a great laptop, I'd heartily recommend this one. I spent quite a while researching my choice and I have to say I can't imagine having chosen a better machine.
Samsung NC20... An Honest Review March 24, 2009 Mr. J. Hopkins (Blackwood, South Wales) 85 out of 86 found this review helpful
I had been looking into purchasing a netbook for quite some time, I had seen a few around but was looking for one that wasn't too expensive with a nice resolution. This laptop is just that. It offers a 1280 x 800 resolution and on a 12" screen this looks very neat and small. When I first opened the box I was excited but then found out that I had a dead pixel on my screen. I contacted Amazon and they sent a replacement the next day and paid for me to send the one with the dead pixel back. I can't fault their service at all. The new one arrived and it's perfect! Just what I wanted! It's very light, the screen is glossy and the laptop has a very smart feel about it. I have installed Microsoft Office 2003 and I haven't had any slow performance so far. I have even installed Adobe Fireworks, Photoshop & Dreamweaver CS3 (was told this wouldn't work on this laptop) and it works fine!! Opens a little slower than used to but it works fine all the same! The keyboard layout is nice but I have noticed two problems, the smaller shift key is on the right hand side of the keyboard and if your typing and used to other laptops you may find yourself pressing the wrong key if you use right shift to use capitals. Another thing I have noticed is that the "\" key is on the right hand side apposed to the left. Not a big problem but may take some getting used to! Other than that I have no problems with the keyboard. Battery life is pretty good as a whole, all depends what your doing on it but I have had around 5 hours or more on a full charge while using it occasionally to browse and chat on Windows Live Messenger. The laptop came with a little cover for it but I would advise buying a case. The laptop doesn't have a CD/DVD drive, which isn't a big problem. I managed to install my programs over my network but you may want to purchase an external drive for around £20-£30 if you do need it. The laptop has Bluetooth, I haven't had a laptop which had this before, and it works pretty well. I have paired my mobile phone with it and I am able to browse through my phone media using Windows Explorer. I am also able to send pictures, videos and music from my phone to the laptop via Bluetooth and they appear in My Documents. So this is a pretty nice feature to have. Windows XP SP3 comes pre installed and runs very smooth. Takes around 20-30 seconds to load up onto the desktop. If your thinking of getting a portable laptop, or maybe even a laptop for the home for basic useage, i.e. documents, browsing, downloading etc then this is the laptop for you! I can't fault it at all!!
My 1st new netbook..samsung NC20...a pensioners review April 12, 2009 Suzzy (Warwickshire. England) 24 out of 24 found this review helpful
I have been looking for a suitable laptop/netbook for a very long time [a user friendly home edition]. I wanted something light, long battery life, easy for a beginner to use, decent keyboard, clear screen easy 'mouse-scroll'useage - a lot of conditions. I know nothing about the 'workings' of computers but from turning it on the tutorial was excellent - my itunes loaded immediately - and I can hear them - even better with earphones, the larger screen is crisp and bright no eyestrain my videos/dvd's are a delight to watch the colours are perfect - have had at least 3/4 applications running at once - nearly as fast as our main computer. The keyboard is very comfortable - mouse with scroll button really easy to use - thought I would be connecting a separate mouse but no need. Wireless connection faultless and it is so quiet. I know nothing about storage - but I have everything on it that is on my main computer and still have plenty of room to spare. Originally purchased this for caravan/social use but I use this all the time around the home rather than being stuck in front of the main computer. I love it..you won't regret buying this
Samsung NC20 - As a video player for the traveller April 29, 2009 R. Gamester (Buckinghamshire, UK) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
The Samsung NC20 is an excellent machine, but with 1Gb of memory it struggles to play back (Terrestrial) TV recordings. This is very obvious when fast moving scenes are displayed, giving comb like edges where it can't keep up with the changes.
If you replace the 1Gb memory with the 2Gb (see "Frequently bought together"), then the video memory is increased and the quality becomes excellent.
Ok, the speakers leave a lot to be desired (they are on the bottom so it depend on the surface), but the headphone output is far better than on some machines I've had.
It only has an SD memory card slot, so you may need a USB reader if you want it to save your holiday snaps.
The Wi-Fi works well but is switched using function keys (so turn it off before boarding your plane).
With the excellent battery life and price, this is a perfect travel companion. All I need now is a small portable printer..
Very impressive April 21, 2009 D. Edwards (Dumfries) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
Was won over by good reviews in the computer magazines, and it has not disappointed. Ordered it in the afternoon, got it by 11 am the next morning. Impressed with the level of detail and thought that Samsung have put into it. Built in driver update, and backup and recovery programmes - you really do feel Samsung want you to have no headaches with this machine. Quick bootup, long battery life. I tend to keep it in the sitting room so it's always easily to hand. Becasue it is easy to fire up, and I don't have to worry about always having it plugged in, I am consequently spending less time in my office, and also sharing more of what I see/do on the internet with my family (wi-fi broadband required of course). It's also easy to pass around. I wanted any netbook I bought to work with my 1024x768 digital projector, and it does that just fine. Very portable (it will be great for using on the train and taking into work), but with a big enough screen that I can see me using it for several hours at a time without getting frustrated. I think my wife is quietly impressed with it too. Good build quality. I am normally a harsh judge of computer equipment (and I don't normally post reviews of it) but this is a very nice bit of kit.
