Netbook, Love it. November 19, 2009 Mr. Guy Mcevoy (Birmingham, UK) 98 out of 100 found this review helpful
I've been waiting for ever to find a netbook with the right spec to replace my old original EEE-PC. The Samsung's all have got really good reviews off the press over the last year which got my attention. I decided to wait for the Windows 7 versions - and when this came out I finally bought one. I've had it for a few weeks now - my thoughts:
- Keyboard - superb. Best out for a netbook. Full speed touch typing with very few errors for me. Huge asset over many of the competitors.
- Battery life. Full working day. I have seriously had 8 and a bit hours out of it.
- Windows 7. This may put some folk off as it is the 'starter' edition. It is so stripped down you can't even change your desktop picture (officially at least, unofficially I found out how to do it on google). That said, you get every feature you are likely to use on a netbook - and those you don't there are aps out there you can download for free. Even the starter version of Windows 7 feels quicker, more stable, and more intuitive than XP or Vista.
- 250 gig hard drive. Nice. (Though in time I may swap it out for a solid state drive to see if I can reduce boot time and increase battery life even more - I'm greedy like that)
- Webcam. Just worked straight away with skype. No configuration needed.
Things that stop it getting the 5 stars (I am fussy!)
Looks - if you are a show off then this may look a bit 'business-like' for you. Not an issue for me (I use it for business) but I bet my nephews wouldn't be impressed despite the piano shiny lid.
RAM - Why does it only come with 1 gig? This slows it down. First thing I did was buy a 2 gig RAM upgrade. Literally a 20 second job to do - don't be scared. And the result was noticeable. It should have had 2 gig to start with though to get the best of Windows 7 - and this has added another 40 odd quid to the outlay.
The wait to get going when you buy it: Straight out of the box the first time you boot it up it auto installs everything (including unwanted Samsung bloat) - you'll be waiting an hour or so before you're up and running normally.
All in though I really am pleased with it. Netbooks are much of a muchness in Spec. The better keyboard, the bigger hard-drive and windows 7 make this good for the price - but don't forget to cost in the extra RAM...
Great computing for when you are on the move November 15, 2009 S. Singh (UK) 29 out of 30 found this review helpful
I bought this for use when travelling. For that it is perfect. Setting up the new netbook is very easy and it all went trouble free. On partitioning the disk, I chose 60 Gb for C drive and balance as D drive. The key elements of the machine are great: e.g great resolution, good keyboard, has all the essential software. It is also slightly faster to boot than my Vista machine - but nothing revolutionary. When on net, I found streaming videos from many sites was a jerky-and-wait affair. This improved significantly on upgrading the RAM to 2GB - but didnt go away all together. Having said that, streaming majority of You Tube videos was ok. Also since I wanted to install CD based software like MS Office etc or sometimes watch DVD on move, I had to buy USB powered DVD player. If you need the above two add-ons(memory + external DVD)then it adds at least 100 pounds to the total mobile-computing package and of course a little more to carry. Battery life is allegedly 11 hours but I never got that - it was more like 7-8 hours and that was when using the machine for simple tasks like browsing net and NOT heavy computing like MS Office work or running external DVD. So I guess it can only go down from here. I didnt like that when opened the lid cannot go down too far. It restricts viewing angles - not sure why they couldnt put a little wider opening "hinge" on it.
Overall it is a nice machine, fast enough and it covers my need sufficiently well to have been worth the purchase. From the little research I did, it seemes that this netbook is among the best netbooks in its class.
An Excellent Buy January 9, 2010 Steven Lacey (Bristol, UK) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I've had the Samsung n140 for just over a month now and I have to say it's a fantastic netbook; I purchased the XP version since at the time the Windows 7 version was a good £40 extra and I didn't have any interest in the extra 90gb of hard drive capacity (or Win7 Basic, bleh!). I did however immediately upon delivery upgrade the netbook to Windows 7 Professional provided free by uni.
I write this review basically to give a quick technical overview for any issues you may be thinking you'll encounter, and to disparage any of the other negative reviews I read on Amazon prior to purchasing myself.
Firstly; the screen DOES tilt back far enough, clearly reviewers on Amazon are for the most part hunchbacked or something as I read so many people complaining about this... I have not once wanted it to tilt back any further than it can; most of the time I don't even use it at max angle, the notion that this is something to complain about or even not purchase the item for is something I fail to be able to fathom.
For the tech savvy, putting Windows 7 on this netbook manually was simple, I just partitioned it with Acronis (any partition editor will do) and installed Windows 7 (via a quick win7>usb stick tutorial), and it found all the drivers itself, then just downloaded all the little helpful Samsung apps for the n140 from their website (enables fn keys etc.).
If you're Ubuntu inclined, this is also just as easy- once again install via usb instructions; the only issue I encountered was with the wireless, at the time of writing there are no linux drivers available for the wireless card integrated so you have to use the Windows ones via ndiswrapper; and even then they don't support WEP (but open and WPA are fine), aside from that everything works natively, even webcam and bluetooth.
I haven't bothered upgrading it to 2gb ram yet but I can see myself doing it the nearby future; 1gb does fine for me at the moment, most of my netbooking revolves loosely around FireFox, MSN, E-Mail, PuTTy and films. A quick note on the battery; I had all of what I just listed open and I then watched an episode of Misfits (45 mins); took the battery down 10-15% ish- honestly, it's a truly astonishing battery. I use it on the Samsung extended battery-life settings (where it only charges up to 80%) to prolong the life of the battery, a good tip I feel.
It just works! November 3, 2009 Mark Twain 22 out of 23 found this review helpful
A computer where everything worked first time without a fuss - wow! From the set-up, to creating a backup, to updates (even Samsung's own), so many hurdles and it didn't crash or conflict, just did the job even with the new Windows 7. Don't think I ever had that with a Windows PC in decades. It's a nice looker too and light. Battery is impressive, but haven't had it long enough to know if it's 11 hours - gut feel is that it's probably 8-9hrs. Track pad also works fabulous. For a netbook price you can't go wrong. Not the fastest machine though.
