5 out of 5 stars 3G access even in places with poor signal strength   April 21, 2010

I had a number of reasons for getting this little box
1- my office is a steel-framed building so phone signal is very poor (no 3G inside the building)
2- I do a bit of Forex Trading, and can't get to the web site on the office network (it's classified as gambling)
3- my laptop is so old its USB ports are getting creaky - they have stopped recognising USB 3G modems
4- when we go caravanning, there are 3 of us on laptops all fighting for the 3G dongle
5- at peak times the home broadband slows to a crawl (3 laptops again), and 3G could help us out

I was truly amazed - it's absolutely brilliant!
Firstly it installed without any complaint. 60 seconds to mobile broadband is about right (it even arrives with a fully charged battery though i ran it plugged into the mains the first time i used it). You simply set security with the supplied short ethernet cable, connect over wireless, and Bob's your uncle. It has accepted two random dongles with no complaints (in fact no comment at all - no setup required) and just got on with the job
I can put it on the windowsill outside the office and it picks up a full signal, but i can stay sat at my desk. Job done.
I bought another 3G dongle so I have Voda and T-Mobile. That seems to cover everywhere it's possible to cover. The router isn't "chatty" so it doesn't use up all your PAYG
I can carry on using an ageing laptop because it doesn't matter that the USB ports don't work any more

I've had it for a couple of weeks now. It's small - very small - and very neat. I constructed a power cable that plugs into a USB port to charge it at lunchtime, which is about the only thing missing.

Get one - at this price you won't regret it!

One note though - I think it may be wise to turn the little box off before plugging in and/or unplugging the dongle. My Voda dongle (Huawei K3765) inexplicably stopped working after I tried to hot swap, but the replacement has worked perfectly after I stopped hot-swapping

5 out of 5 stars Clever little device   February 9, 2010

I have just received this device and am very impressed with the simplicity of the set up. I thought I'd add a review for those like me who need to use more than one USB dongle. I have one USB dongle supplied by my company (T-Mobile contract), and one of my own for private use (Vodafone Top Up and Go). The device happily swapped between these, albeit requiring a reset after they were swapped (very simple procedure). Swapping the dongle made no difference to the wireless network or its settings, so was totally painless.

There was no noticeable drop in speed over plugging the dongles straight into a laptop, although I never tried any speed tests.

Summary: Great device, easy to setup and easy to use.

This device was up and running within 15 minutes. Zoom 3G Wireless-N Travel Router

I had to upgrade the firmware to recognise my old Orange Option ICON 2 dongle. I also entered the Orange APN into the settings screen, changed the admin password and set up a wireless key. Having done that it recognised the dongle and connected straight away.

For the price, functionality and the range of dongles that it recognises I cannot fault this little box - highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Little Box of Tricks   June 14, 2010

This is a great little device !

My kids have iPod Touches, my wife has her laptop and I have my iPad. How can we all get access to the Internet, at home, on holiday, in the car, at the airport etc?
Easy, you just need to create your own WiFi hotspot using this neat little mains/battery powered travel router.

Step 1 - Get this travel router and configure it with WPA security - this will keep you safe and stop others from hijacking the wireless connection (unless they know your password). This is easy to do using the admin software provided and there are full instructions on the CD provided.

Step 2 - Next you need a suitable USB modem that will work in your desired locations (using a locally sourced SIM card of course, to avoid huge roaming charges).

There are a number of options here:

Option 1: Buy the sibling product - the Zoom USB 3G Modem which is fully unlocked and will take any SIM card from any network - definately the most hassle free solution
Option 2: If you have an existing USB modem locked to a UK network provider you could try and unlock it (a quick google on modem model number and you will be on the right track)
Option 3: Buy a USB modem in the country in which you are travelling to ( but remember unless you unlock it, it wont work when you get back home) - it will probably come with a pre-charged SIM card with say 1GB data. In Portugal, this cost around 40 euros.

Important - before buying a local USB modem remember to first check the compatibilty list on the Zoom Website - most mainstream modems are supported

Step 3 - Plug in the USB Modem with a locally source SIM data card and switch on. In the majority of circumstances it should simply work. If you have problems it is most likely that your APN parameter needs to be configured - you will need to contact the local network provider for this information.

The device itself is about the size of 1.5 playing card boxes and the battery last in the region of 2.5 hrs with typical use. Because the modem plugs in to the side on the router, it is a somewhat awkward shape to carry around - so when transporting suggest you disconnect to reduce the risk of snapping it off.

Because it runs of the battery you can easily move it about to get the best 3G reception - the status screen has a signal strength output which is useful.

One point to watch out for - don't set the wireless type to "n only" as iPhones and iPod Touches don't support n - they need g to work, so go for "n/g mix"
