Very good laptop which connected to the internet and wifi within minutes. It was despatched by Amazon uk on 15 Jan 2010, via MRW, and received by me in Menorca on 20 Jan. 2010. I have been touch typing for almost 50 years and I can say the keyboard on this laptop is the best I have used to date.

4 out of 5 stars I like it   February 16, 2010

Initial impressions are positive. I don't have the luxury of being able to compare this with other 2009-era laptops as my own experiences in the past few years have been a desktop PC and more recently an LG netbook, so all I can really go by is how it feels and operates. One minor irritant is what I consider to be an over-sized Caps Lock key, such that I keep pressing that by mistake instead of the A key. A strong positive though is that it runs very cool compared to the netbook, in fact the base of it is hardly any warmer after several hours. The touchpad is less sensitive than I would like, I have already not tapped it hard enough on countless occasions - but I guess as I become more familiar with it this will cease to be an issue. When using the battery, which seems to last for about 150 minutes, the screen is a little difficult to see against a brightly-lit background (in my case, my back garden in sunshine while I am indoors). When powered from the mains, I didn't notice this. The screen is great apart from this. The keyboard overall is very good, I like the spacing between all keys and I get the impression that it will last a long time. As for its overall quality of construction, which some others have criticised, I would say that it is 'industrial' rather than cool or fashionable, but to be honest I'm not bothered about cosmetic style, I just want form and function, and in this regard this laptop suits me just fine.

From taking it out of the (very fiddly) box to being online took less than 5 minutes, I wasn't timing myself but it was definitely less than five, and was completely idiot-proof.

I chose this because of its spec, the Intel dual core precessor, confidence in Sony as a brand, Windows 7 OS and the mostly positive feedback. The price is par for the course. So far I'm pleased with my choice, I considered alternatives from Dell, Toshiba, HP, Samsung, Packard Bell and Acer and as yet I have no reason to wish I had bought anything other than this.

For me, one of the highest priorities is reliability; obviously I cannot comment on that with this laptop being brand new but if I have any problems I will update this review in the future. For the moment I will give this a 4-star 'very good' rating, it doesn't have any serious drawbacks that I am aware of but it hasn't had me running down the street skipping in joy either. It just works, it's functional, it feels reasonably solid and gives the impression that it will be a dependable workhorse.
