5 out of 5 stars Powerful and portable notebook   March 30, 2010

I have had this notebook since November 2009. I bought it originally as a replacement for my 16" Sony which is very good, but very heavy and short on battery life.
I wanted something easy to carry round, that didn't need a mains supply, just in case. This Acer has proved ideal, I own a software company and this has allowed me to do several presentations in a day without a charge. It works great with my projector and the sound on external speakers is very good.
The fact it has no optical drive hasn't been an issue and the screen is very good. I tend to use mine with a mouse as I don't like track pads, but this one seems better than some I have used.
I highly recommend this machine if you want something small and light, yet able to run all the business software I have thrown at it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent product with one exception   April 12, 2010

Brought this Acer for business use and have loaded with Office 2007, all runs beautifully. I would say this is one of the best pieces of technology I've bought for years. I spend a lot of time on the road and access all my emails and files using the Acer and my mobile (for wireless Broadband), it's great.
My only gripe is that the Acer chassis is slightly twisted and doesn't sit on all 4 feet when on my desk (it's not a twisted desk - checked that). I didn't spot this until a few days after I bought it and I guess this would be treated as something I did. However, it doesn't spoil the overall enjoyment. If you want a small, light and quick machine for business use, you won't be disappointed (just check it sits flat on your desk before doing anything else).
Oh, and I shouldn't forget Amazon, great price and service - as usual

5 out of 5 stars Best portable laptop   April 14, 2010

I have only owned this laptop a short amount of time. I have never liked small laptops as they have often lack the power I would like from a machine. This is in fact both the cheapest and the smallest laptop I have ever bought for myself. I have to say that it is amazing. It doesnt feel cheap and is powerful enough to carry out most tasks demanded from it.

Best points:

1) extremely light (near weight of most netbooks and similar to macbook air)

2) far faster than a netbook with atom processor and only 1gb of ram

3) good battery life (scrap that, unbelievable battery life)

4) good quality screen (borrowing a friends netbook i couldnt get used to the 10inch screen with 1024 by 600 pixels. The 1366 x 768 of the acer is much much better)

5) excellent design (even when compared to my mac and hp hdx 16)

6) HDMI and SD card slot (excellent additions)

Area to improve

Though this is an excellent laptop if I had to change on thing it would be the keys. I have been using my HP HDX 16 so long and have fallen in love with the quality keyboard. If Acer could put a version of that keyboard on this laptop I would have to find some way to give this product 6 stars.

Note: The keyboard is of equal quality of anything in the same price range I have looked at.

5 out of 5 stars stellar battery life, very good performance   March 23, 2010

I've had this now for about 3mths, and it has been a fantastic purchase. I do a lot of programming/development work on the train, and I wanted something that was powerful enough with a good battery life.

Out of the box, this thing really impressed me. Good build quality, very sleek. I am managing to get around 6-7hrs of development time (quite disk intensive) out of this per charge. When I just edit documents I'm getting even longer. At one point I got around 10+ hrs. Basically, I can take it out for the day without taking the charger. Very impressive. I find I don't alway have to recharge every night. I have to keep reminding myself that even when the battery is down to 20% or so that I've still got a couple of hrs left.

I've found the performance to be very decent. I'm not doing anything too intensive though. The dual core cpu helps, can't remember the speed, but in practice it's decent -- many times better than my netbook. In fact, it's so decent that I'm toying with retiring my current desktop. 3gb of RAM -- i've not had any problems running Eclipse (a java IDE) with a fairly hefty project that I created for my phd.

Windows 7 on this thing is a joy. I'm a linux developer by preference, so I'm normally a bit biased, but on this laptop Windows hasn't given me any trouble at all. Resumes very quickly (between 5 and 20secs), never had any problems with it. The Windows 7 interface is quite minimalistic and sparse -- a great improvement over vista. The windows version included is 64-bit -- it's actually much more convenient and seamless than I had anticipated. It runs my 32-bit apps (including the JVM + Eclipse and syncbackse) without problems.

Anyway, that's my experience with this laptop. I've been extremely impressed, and I've not regretted my purchase at all.

Some particulars: no DVI output, it's HDMI which is a bit annoying but i'm looking fwd to getting an HDMI-capable monitor. has a analogue VGA output. The keyboard doesn't have raised edges on the keys, which is normally a bit of a problem for me, but I can cope ok on this one. I think it ok because the keys are quite well separated, I've managed to adjust. Some of the dual keys (e.g. function + right cursor for end etc) are a bit annoying -- i find myself often turning down the screen brightness instead of going to the end of a line. oh well, I could always remap the keys. The keys are actually a decent size on this, as opposed to many netbooks. It's something like 95% of the size of a normal keyboard. Clever use of space. The mouse buttons on the laptop are a bit cheap in feel but passable. The mousepad supports multitouch etc, but i found it gets in the way so i turned it off...

The display is glossy, which hasn't caused as much problems as I'd expected. Generally very readable except in very bright light. I use it on the train without problems. No problems with wifi or anything else. Very much recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Best 'netbook' yet!   May 3, 2010

When netbooks first came along in 2007, I jumped on the bandwagon. In the past couple of years I've had three Eee PCs (701, 900, 1000H), a Compaq Mini 700, and a Samsung NC20. I loved the Sammy in particular, but as I do a lot of typing and netsurfing on my netbook I became increasingly frustrated with the limitations of traditional netbook processors. The Sammy's Nano was better than the Atom for single apps, but there was noticeable lag when opening multiple web pages at once. Possibly this was a graphics issue as the integrated graphics card on the NC20 is not optimised for Flash, and the processor couldn't handle it particularly well either.

This little machine is a million times better. Everything is faster, snappier. I'm not kept waiting around, and even with Aero on full nothing lags. In terms of size it's literally the same size as the Asus 1000H - you can use the case and indeed the slipcase I bought for my Acer was a 10", despite the fact that the machine has an 11'6 screen. Portability and battery life are both excellent and the keyboard is pretty good too. I don't know yet if I've got flex, but so far I'm inclined to think not.

Just out of curiosity, I ran the PassMark benchmark tests on both my Acer 1810tz and my Vaio AR51m. The latter is relatively old now, but has a pretty good spec: a decently powerful C2D processor, an nVidia 8400GT graphics card and 2GB ram since it came with Vista. It now runs Win 7 extremely well. This little Acer did not trump it - except in 2D scores, where it did signficantly better. I can see that for myself in day to day use. All the other scores were just slightly less than the Vaio's, except obviously for graphics where the nVidia card left the Intel 4500 well and truly in the dust. Overall scores were less than a hundred points apart: the Acer got @480, whereas the Vaio scored @540.

All in all, a great purchase and one I intend to keep until it falls apart!
